Serbian youngsters’ first international letter writing competition

The Post of Serbia has enabled young people aged 9 to 15 to participate for the first time this year in the International Letter Writing Competition organized by the Universal Postal Union as a specialized agency of the United Nations.

The topic of this year's competition, which has been held continuously throughout the world for the past 51 years, is the global environmental crisis, and young people from Serbia should send their letters to the address of the Post of Serbia, which is a member of the Universal Postal Union. The best letter will represent Serbia before the international jury in Geneva, Switzerland.

This year's international competition "Write a letter to someone influential explaining why and how they should take action on the climate crisis" is held according to the rules of the Universal Postal Union, which means that the letter must be handwritten, respecting the strict letter form. This means that compositions must contain all the elements of the letter: heading (complete address of the author and the date of the letter), greeting (Dear, etc.), body (content), complimentary close and signature. Letters must not be longer than 800 words, and in addition to the handwritten version, participants should also submit an electronic transcript. The evaluation criteria will be the structure of the letter, adherence to the topic, creativity and use of language. The national competition is open from March 22 to April 22, and participants shall send their compositions to the address of the Post of Serbia, PO Box 900, 11000 Belgrade 6, with the note – Letter Writing Competition "Letter to an influential person regarding the climate crisis".

The Post of Serbia has decided to join for the first time this competition being held by the Universal Postal Union, a specialized agency of the United Nations for postal services, since 1971, with the aim of contributing to the improvement of literacy among young people through the art of writing letters and encouraging participants to express their creativity and perfect their language skills. The Post of Serbia shares the values of the Universal Postal Union and believes that, despite the fact that we live in the digital age, learning proper expression through the written word is an ability that every young person should cultivate for personal development and preparation for the future.
