Bajrakli Mosque on postage stamps

Mufti of Belgrade Mustafa Jusufspahić and Acting Director of the Post of Serbia, Zoran Đorđević, presented in the premises of the Islamic Community in Belgrade an issue of commemorative postage stamps marking the great jubilee - 500 years of the Bajrakli Mosque.

"Belgrade is a city with a history that could be envied by much larger cities. The intersection is both a place of collision and meeting and a city that managed to preserve the Bajrakli Mosque for a full 500 years. We owe a great deal of gratitude to the Post of Serbia, its employees and our dear friend, Director Zoran Đorđević, who recognized the importance of this publication. We are grateful that we had the opportunity to collaborate on this noble project," said Jusufspahić, who expressed his satisfaction with the issue of this stamp, since this is the first time in the history of Belgrade that a postage stamp with mosque motifs has been issued.

"Serbia today is different, a mature society without prejudices and a community of all nations and religions where everyone is welcome, and that is the message we are sending to the world with this stamp. As an important state institution, we want to continue to improve our relations, which is why we will continue cooperation with the Islamic community in the future," said Đorđević.

Due to its antiquity, rarity, preservation of its original purpose, as well as the representativeness of religious architecture and Islamic culture, the Bajrakli Mosque, which was built around 1522, was placed under the protection of the state as a cultural monument, and in 1979, it was declared a cultural asset of great importance. The issue entitled "Art: Architecture - Bajrakli Mosque in Belgrade" contains a commemorative postage stamp in a sheet of eight stamps each with a vignette in the middle, a first-day cover and a commemorative seal.
