The Post of Serbia celebrates its 185th anniversary
Belgrade, June 7th – On the 185th anniversary of the Post of Serbia, on 7 June, the largest robotic system for automated sorting of parcels was put into operation at the Regional Postal and Logistics Centre "Belgrade" in Zemun, which is of vital importance for the functioning of the entire sorting system in the system of the Post of Serbia.
The ceremony, which was attended by numerous high-ranking officials, was addressed by the Acting Director of the Post of Serbia Zoran Anđelković, Ministers in the Government of Serbia Boris Bratina and Dejan Vuk Stanković, Director of the Office for IT and eGovernment Mihailo Jovanović, and President of the Belgrade City Assembly Nikola Nikodijević.
Director Zoran Anđelković presented current projects and plans and business results in the most important business segments – growth in business income and the volume of services provided, increasing Post-Express's share in the domestic express services market to 30 percent, and developing innovations and information technologies. He said that the long-term strategic and development commitment of the Post of Serbia is the modernization of the business and logistics network, automation of business processes, and the application of new technological solutions and artificial intelligence.
Anđelković pointed out that in just one year, the Post of Serbia provided robotic systems for sorting of postal items in five postal and logistics centres, in order to provide capacities for better implementation of the sorting process, and thus postal services throughout the country.
"By the next anniversary, I am convinced that we will skip another decade in digital terms, through e-delivery, which we are developing with the Ministry and the Office for eGovernment, drones for mail delivery, but also other innovations that we will be proud of at that time," said Director Anđelković. He thanked the President of the Republic, Aleksandar Vučić, partners from the Government of Serbia, and all collaborators in major projects for their support.
Minister of Information and Telecommunications Boris Bratina expressed his satisfaction that the Post of Serbia is continuously improving its work and creating better conditions for its employees.
"In addition to improving operations, the Post of Serbia and its management have shown care for their employees, as evidenced by the latest Collective Agreement, which improved the material situation of employees at the Post. The Post and its employees deserve much more than that. We are aware of how hard and diligently the Post works, and I believe that the director and his team will continue to fight for a better status for the Post of Serbia and its employees, because this system is much more than a public enterprise. The Post of Serbia is one of the symbols of our state, I would dare to say one of the symbols of statehood," said Minister Bratina.
Minister of Education Dejan Vuk Stanković spoke about the cooperation between the Ministry and the Post of Serbia on the dual education project, through the training of high school students, primarily students of the Secondary PTT School, Secondary Traffic School and Information Technology School, as well as students of faculties participating in the project, such as the Faculty of Organizational Sciences in Belgrade, the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad and others.
"Currently, almost 200 students and pupils are participating in this programme and I hope that we will deepen this cooperation, that there will be more educational institutions and pupils who will undergo quality training in interaction with competent staff from the Post of Serbia," said Minister Stanković.
The President of the Belgrade City Assembly, Nikola Nikodijević, said that the importance of the Post of Serbia is immeasurable for the functioning of the Republic, the city of Belgrade, the economy and all citizens.
"On the one hand, we have a technological breakthrough and an unimaginable acceleration of business, modern communication systems supported by artificial intelligence, and on the other hand, a secure presence and provision of everyday services everywhere in the territory of the entire Serbia. This is a fundamental public interest and this synergy of the new and the traditional only institutions that we are truly proud of can make," said Nikodijević.
Director of the eGovernment Office, Mihailo Jovanović, expressed his pleasure at attending the ceremony and added that he had spent half of his working life at the Post of Serbia. He pointed out that the Post of Serbia has always known how to fight against time and that the innovations it has introduced are very significant for the Serbian economy. “The Post of Serbia has launched a robotic system for automatic sorting of parcels, which has made an important step towards the modernization and improvement of postal services,” concluded Jovanović.
The robotic platform at the main postal centre in Zemun has 153 robots and 216 sorting exits in different areas, with a sorting capacity of 7,000 items per hour. The integration of the robots into the business information system was carried out by the best engineers and programmers at the Post of Serbia, who developed a complex software solution in just three months. The software automatically performs six technological operations that have so far been implemented manually, which significantly shortens the time spent on keeping items in postal centres, and thus the time for delivery to end users. On the other hand, it contributes to improving the working conditions of employees and facilitating daily tasks, reducing manual work and repetitive tasks.
Previously, the robotic system was implemented in centres in Niš, Novi Sad and Kragujevac, and by the end of June it is planned to be launched in the postal centre in Kraljevo.
In honour of the anniversary, 185 years since the first post office was opened in Belgrade, officially starting public postal service in Serbia, the Post of Serbia has released a special series of commemorative postage stamps "185 Years of the Post of Serbia", in the artistic realization of Marija Vlahović, the creator of the Post of Serbia stamps. Professional cooperation in the realization of the issue was provided by the PTT Museum.
The artistic part of the programme featured the Cultural and Artistic Society "Đoka Pavlović", which this year celebrates 80 years of existence and work under the auspices of the Post of Serbia.
