Philately of the Sovereign Order of Malta on display at the PTT Museum
The philatelic exhibition "Postage stamps of the Sovereign Order of Malta" from the collection of the Postal Administration of the Sovereign Order of Malta in Rome was opened at the PTT Museum by the Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to the Republic of Serbia, Francesco M. Amoruso, and the Acting Director of Pošta Srbije, Zoran Anđelković.
Ambassador Francesco M. Amoruso emphasized that the philatelic exhibition of the Order of Malta at the PTT Museum has exceptional symbolic significance in light of the anniversary this year - 25 years of diplomatic relations between the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and the Republic of Serbia, which, according to him, represents ties built on perseverance, mutual respect and a shared vision.
“Over a quarter of a century, relations between the Order and Serbia have been strengthened through an open and constructive dialogue, which has resulted in concrete cooperation in the humanitarian, healthcare and social fields,” said Ambassador Amoruso. He announced that the Order of Malta’s Poste Magistrali will issue a commemorative postage stamp in September to mark the “silver jubilee” of diplomatic relations.
Director Zoran Anđelković expressed his satisfaction that the PTT Museum is hosting the presentation of the Maltese philatelic heritage and is once again contributing to the promotion of shared history and cooperation between postal administrations and states. He highlighted the long-standing and good relations between Serbia and the Order of Malta, which in 2025 marked the 140th anniversary of the first donation of the Order of Malta to the Kingdom of Serbia, which was also commemorated by the issuance of a personalized postage stamp. He said that regardless of modern technologies and the speed they bring, postage stamps still have a multifaceted, historical, cultural and artistic value.
"The public and all interested parties can see the history, functioning, cooperation with our country and other countries, and the humanitarian work of the Knights of Malta through the stamps. We are always open to presenting this at the PTT Museum," said Anđelković. Director Anđelković offered to present the issue of Poste Magistrali in honour of the diplomatic anniversary at the PTT Museum.
The exhibition also includes a part of the collections that have not been exhibited before outside the headquarters of the Postal Administration of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (Poste Magistrali) in Rome, which it provided through the Embassy in Belgrade – postage stamps, postcards, first-day covers, from its founding on November 20, 1966, when it issued its first postage stamp, to the present day. Among others, a postage stamp with the motif of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos Philermosa, which is kept in the Historical Museum of Montenegro in Cetinje, and which, according to tradition, was painted by the Holy Apostle Luke in the year 46, postage stamps on the occasion of various anniversaries and Catholic holidays, as well as stamps created in cooperation with postal administrations of other countries.
The philatelic exhibition "Postage Stamps of the Sovereign Order of Malta" is available to visitors of the PTT Museum in Belgrade until September 1. Admission is free of charge.
